Dakota Lithium build LiFePO4 batteries for marine use. Against lead-acid the practical differences are usable depth of discharge, weight, and how long the bank lasts — a lithium bank gives you most of its rated capacity rather than half of it, at a fraction of the weight.

What we do with it

• Size the bank to the actual load. Fridge, electronics, audio, autopilot and lights, against how long you need to sit without running the engine. Guessing this is how boats end up with a bank that is too small and cycled too hard.
• Change the charging to match. This is the part that gets skipped. Lithium wants a different charge profile from lead-acid, so the alternator regulation, charger and any solar controller usually need setting up or replacing alongside the batteries.
• Fit it as an electrical job. Cabling, fusing, isolation and mounting are marine electrical work, and that is the side of the shop that does it.
